World Oceans Day 2009
World Oceans Day 2009 will be celebrated on 8 June. The theme this year is: «Our Oceans, Our Responsibility».
World Oceans Day allows us to highlight the many ways in which oceans contribute to society. It is also an opportunity to recognize the considerable challenges we face in maintaining their capacity to regulate the global climate, supply essential ecosystem services and provide sustainable livelihoods and safe recreation.
The IMO has a significant role to play in preserving the marine environment and ensuring that shipping does not have a negative impact and has, over the years, adopted a wide range of measures to prevent and control pollution caused by ships and to mitigate the effects of any damage that may occur. These are all positive proof of the firm determination of Governments and the industry to reduce to the barest minimum the impact that shipping may have on our fragile environment.
